Improving River Safety with SC 155 II Lanterns on the Temburong River, Brunei

 In Case studies

As vessel traffic on Brunei’s Temburong River continued to grow, the government sought a modern, low-maintenance lighting solution to support safe inland navigation. The installation of SC 155 II self-contained LED lanterns, combined with remote satellite-based monitoring, provided a future-ready system that enhances safety and simplifies asset management across the region.

Background & Challenge

The Temburong River in Brunei plays an essential role in regional transport, connecting communities and supporting local commerce. As part of Brunei’s National Development Plan 2007–2012, efforts were made to modernise infrastructure and improve public safety—especially in areas experiencing rising traffic volumes.

Over the years, vessel traffic along the Temburong River has significantly increased, raising concerns about passenger safety, especially during night operations or in poor visibility. The government identified a need to enhance navigational aids along the river to ensure safer and more efficient travel for boat and ferry operators.

Solution for Safer Inland Travel – Sabik SC 155 II with Remote Monitoring

To meet the safety goals of the development plan, the Government of Brunei selected Sabik’s SC 155 II self-contained LED lanterns as the preferred solution. Known for their reliability, rugged construction, and low power consumption, Sabik lanterns were ideally suited for Brunei’s challenging tropical conditions and remote riverine locations.

Each lantern in the project was equipped with:

  • SC 155 II LED lantern – a modular, general-purpose beacon suitable for fixed and floating structures

  • Inmarsat satellite-based monitoring, integrated via the WebSCADA server – enabling remote status checks and diagnostics from a central location

The ability to monitor the lanterns remotely was a crucial feature, reducing the need for frequent manual inspections in hard-to-access areas and ensuring the system remained operational year-round.

Outcome: SC 155 II Lanterns Improve Navigation and Confidence on the Temburong River

The installation of the SC 155 II lanterns has significantly improved navigational safety on the Temburong River. Vessel operators report enhanced visibility and easier navigation, especially during early morning, evening, and low-light conditions. The system has also reduced operational strain on local authorities thanks to its remote monitoring capability.

At the opening ceremony, Minister of Communications, Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, remarked:

“We hope that the navigation lights will benefit the frequent boat and vessel operators along the Temburong River.”

Since installation, the feedback from users has been positive, confirming that the new lighting system has become an important asset in maintaining safe and reliable river transport.
